The Online Writing Lab (OWL) at Purdue University houses writing resources and instructional material. Here you will find information to assist with writing projects.

This site is particularly helpful resources for grammar, including practice activities and PowerPoints.

PREWRITING TOOLS

Have an assignment but are unsure of where to start? Use the following applications to brainstorm, plan, and organize your ideas. All tools have easy ways to insert links, images, and other external content, which may be especially helpful for working with writers on research projects.

  • Google Docs (can be used with your Lane student account or standard Gmail)

A free, online software application that provides basic word processing capabilities as well as easy online sharing. It is especially useful for sharing notes, outlines, and drafts created during sessions at the WC+.

An open-source, free software that guides you through the process of creating mind maps.

Another software for creating thought-webs and outlines. This software allows for exportation to a variety of platforms for printing and sharing maps on both Mac and PC.

Another free online mind-mapping software, a special form of a structured diagram to visually organize information.

“Popplet is a tool for the iPad and web to capture and organize your ideas.” Popplet integrates especially well with iPad but can easily be shared across platforms.

POSTWRITING TOOLS

This resource provides some practical advice on proofreading from the Lane CC Writing Coaches.

This text analysis tool provides information on the readability and complexity of a text, as well as statistics on word frequency and character count. It is great for determining a paper's reading level.

MISCELLANEOUS

This handout explains the most commonly used fallacies of argument using clear, simple language and images.

Use this website to hear your paper read aloud in a voice and cadence of your choosing. This site is a useful tool for catching grammar and spelling errors and for assessing the flow of your writing.
